| Digital Orthophotography
Digital orthoimagery is imagery that has been developed to be spatially accurate so that it possesses map qualities such as consistent scale. Digital orthophotography was developed for the South Shore of Long Island to provide an accurate base map to aid in the development of the South Shore Estuary Reserve Comprehensive Management Plan. Approximately 500 square miles of Long Island are included in this digital orthophotography project. Currently, digital orthophotography is used to detect and map natural resources such as tidal wetlands; confirm or verify land use and conditions; provide accurate shoreline locations for erosion monitoring; and provide a real world backdrop to enhance interpretation of graphed information. Ortho images are hosted at the NYS Interactive Mapping Gateway, and can be viewed at that site.
