Cathedral Pines
(Middle Island)

Cathedral Pines County Park is best known for its 6-mile mountain bike trail, maintained completely by volunteers. It is a good example of how a park system can design its parks to specialize in different activities for different users. The mountain biking trail encircles a large open area for camping, picnicking, jamborees, and even dog training.

The 320-acre park also possesses a pleasant loop trail, almost one mile long. The Carman’s River flows along the east margin of the park. If you camp in the park, it serves as a good base to the other sights at Prosser Pines, Rocky Point Preserve, Carman’s River canoe route, and Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge.

Cathedral Pines is named after the ancient pine grove at Prosser Pines County Preserve, only 0.8 miles north of Cathedral Pines park entrance. The two properties are managed together as one unit.

For information, contact the park office at (631) 852-5500. For information on mountain biking, call Concerned Long Island Mountain Bicyclists (CLIMB), (631) 271-6527.

How to Get There: Take the Long Island Expressway (Route 475) to exit 66 North. Head north on Sills Road. Bear left onto Middle Island-Yaphank Road (Route 21). When you pass Bartlett Road on your left, the park entrance is just ahead on your left. Pick up a map at the entrance booth.

The short nature trail is located at the north corner of Parking Field A, shortly after the entrance booth.
