Smith Point County Park Another park where you can see nesting areas of the piping plover and least tern is Smith Point County Park. The best time to see shore birds and other rarities is late summer. The park is located on either side of Moriches Inlet and requires a county permit. For further information contact Smith Point County Park at (631) 852-1313. How to Get There: Smith Point County
Park is reached via Sunrise Highway exit 58. Go south on William Floyd
Parkway and over Smith Point Bridge. Turn left and drive to the large
parking lot for the beach. Smith Point Park is one of Long Island’s
few beaches where you can drive your car on the beach. With a permit,
you can drive along the beach, if you wish, staying above the high tide
zone. This gives you the opportunity to drive to the remote east end
of the barrier island where you can experience solitude, as well as
great birding, fishing, and camping.
