Mill Pond Park “Classically scenic” is the phrase to describe Mill Pond Park. Its lakeshore and woods trails offer a quiet ambience and a nice destination for nature study. On the handsome lake, swans and other waterfowl can easily be seen. The woods are mature with sizable white and black oaks, as well as scarlet oak, sweet gum, black cherry and flowering dogwood. High bush blueberry may offer some fruit delights in summer. How to Get There: Take Wantagh Parkway to exit W6W. Follow Merrick Road west for several blocks. Pull over and park at the curb when you see the lake on your right. Facing the lake, head left on the paved trail, which goes along the shore. It enters woods and crosses one foot bridge, and later, a second foot bridge. Here you have two options. First, you can cross the second footbridge and turn right on a bikeway, which returns you to Merrick Road. Second, just before the footbridge, you can turn left on an unpaved path. This takes you through more mature woods. Take each left-hand turn of the trail and it ultimately returns you to the paved trail. Turn right to return to your car. From here, we recommend you visit
neighboring natural areas at Twin Lakes and Merrick Preserves.
