Meadow Croft Historic Site and Roosevelt Estate County
Park The Meadow Croft Estate, built in 1891, was the summer home of the attorney John Ellis Roosevelt, cousin of President Teddy Roosevelt. This mansion is another one of Isaac Green’s designs. Down the road behind the estate is the historic Laughlin Vineyard, which periodically sponsors wine tasting. These sites are part of the Roosevelt Estate County Park. The preserve also offers views of a large marsh with tidal creek Bayport Heritage Association and Suffolk County Parks operate the Meadow Croft Estate. For tours and reservations, call (631) 854-4949. For hours, call (631) 472-4625. Just north of this site is the 302-acre Sans Soucci Lakes County Preserve, which includes many ponds and Brown’s River. At the time of this writing, there did not appear to be nature trails developed in this 3.5 mile long preserve, but contact them about this. It occupies the stretch between Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway. How to Get There: From Sunrise Highway, take exit 49 (Lakeland Avenue) south to Montauk Highway. Turn left onto Montauk Highway and immediately bear right at Middle Road. Follow Middle Road a short distance to Saint Anne’s Church on your left. Marked entrance is immediately on the left past Saint Anne’s, just before Bryan’s bridge. Follow the dirt road to the estate house. Just south of Meadow Croft is Sayville
Beach, an attractive community park with a quality beach and recreation
facilities. To get there, turn right out of the entrance to Meadow Croft,
and take Middle Road to Foster Avenue. Make a left, and just before
reaching the bay, turn left on Browns River Road. The beach park’s
entrance is on your right.
