Long Island Maritime Museum The Long Island Maritime Museum was originally part of the estate of architect Isaac Green. This high quality museum preserves Long Island’s maritime heritage with historic sailing vessels, and exhibits, historical objects, paintings and photos of the fishing and shellfish industry. A historic bayman’s cottage and oyster house are on the grounds. The museum offers educational programs on nautical skills for school groups, as well as tours and field trips. The museum shows how the fishing and seafood industry flourished while environmental quality was healthy, but declined as the environment declined. Educators can also utilize its historic library. Annual events for the entire community include seafood festivals, craft fairs and boat regattas. To reserve a group program, contact (631) 854-4974 or 631-HISTORY, P.O. Box 184, 86 West Avenue, West Sayville, NY 11796. The museum (though not their office) is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
