South Shore Communities to Receive State Matching Funds

On October 4th, Governor Pataki announced his recommendations for grants from the Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act, which would be awarded to local governments on Long Island for various water quality improvement projects. The eleven prospective recipients on the South Shore are Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and the towns of Southampton, Brookhaven, and Islip. The total amount of proposed funding for the South Shore Estuary Reserve municipalities in this round of Bond Act funding would be over $1.6 million.

Governor Pataki also announced eight grants from the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) to be awarded to South Shore municipalities for activities related to Local Waterfront Revitalization Programs. Grants will be used for such activities as public access facility design, harbor management plans, shoreline restoration, a shellfish habitat restoration feasibility study, and preparation of Local Waterfront Revitalization programs. Recipients of these grants include the City of Long Beach, the towns of Oyster Bay, Babylon, Brookhaven, and Southampton, and the communities of Mastic Beach and Ocean Beach. The total amount to be awarded to South Shore municipalities in this round of EPF funding is $217,800.
