Plans are underway for a South Shore Estuary Reserve (SSER) student conference. The conference, which is planned to take place at Bellport High School on April 5th, will focus on educating students, developing local projects, increasing awareness and sharing stewardship information and program ideas about environmental issues related to the SSER. The student conference is a partnership between the South Shore Estuary Reserve Council, Bellport High School's Students for Environmental Quality (SEQ), and the Post-Morrow Foundation, Inc.
SEQ is a club with a 2 year history of environmental advocacy within the South
Shore Estuary. Some accomplishments include helping to protect the Carmans River
under the Recreational, Scenic and Wild Rivers Act and joining
in the effort to pass the New York State Bottle Bill. Recently, SEQ has formed
a partnership with the Post-Morrow Foundation to promote environmental education
and develop programs to preserve the fragile environment of the Brookhaven Hamlet
area.
The Post and Morrow families have a long held tradition of philanthropy in the Brookhaven community. The family has donated many parcels of land including the land which houses the Brookhaven Library. Elisabeth and Thomas Post Morrow continued the tradition by donating various gifts to community groups through the establishment of the Post-Morrow Foundation, Inc.
Established in 1969, the Post-Morrow Foundation is dedicated to the preservation
of the rural countryside and historic character of the Hamlet of Brookhaven
and surrounding areas. In cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
the
foundation entered into an agreement to restore and enhance coastal wetlands
adjacent to Beaver Dam Creek. In addition, with the cooperation of the Town
of Brookhaven, the Post-Morrow Foundation and SEQ have worked together to "adopt"
the Fireplace Nature Preserve.
