Cornelia Schlenk, Chair
Technical Advisory Committee
Cornelia Schlenk, chair of the Technical Advisory Committee, possesses cheerful intelligence, as well as the skills, poise and insightfulness needed to lead the group in fulfilling its mandate: reviewing and overseeing studies, interpreting and evaluating data, and providing technical support for developing management measures and policies.
As assistant director of New York Sea Grant, Cornelia must keep her administrative, management, and team skills honed. She helps manage Sea Grant's multidisciplinary research, education, and outreach activities - all of which focus on marine and coastal issues, problems, and opportunities.
Cornelia is no newcomer to such work. With Sea Grant since 1987, she also has held technical and administrative positions with Connecticut's marine fisheries programs and Stony Brook's Marine Sciences Research Center, and has consulted as a full-time administrator of a $1 million aquaculture innovation program for the New York State Urban Development Corporation.
Cornelia's degrees in biology and marine environmental sciences seem natural outcomes when one considers her "deep" interest in underwater environments. Yet, though her love for the south shore estuary remains unabated, Cornelia confesses that having completed many all-season, research-related dives in Long Island waters, she now "prefers SCUBA in the tropics."
Jeffrey Fullmer, Chair
Citizens Advisory Committee
It was no surprise the members of the Citizens Advisory Committee selected Jeffrey Fullmer as their chair. Friendly, intelligent, and optimistic, Jeff has a knack for getting citizens involved in environmental issues, keeping them informed and motivated, making it easy for them to exchange ideas and build coalitions.
A south shore resident, avid fisherman, and Great South Bay enthusiast, Jeff was involved in the earliest stages of south shore estuary reserve activities - even prior to the South Shore Estuary Reserve Act. Jeff understands grassroots organizing. As program director for Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Jeff plans campaigns and uses his extensive knowledge of a broad range of environmental laws and regulations. His work advocating before legislatures has helped him cultivate and refine his abilities in building consensus on policy issues.
Beyond his degree and further studies in speech communications, mass media studies, and communication arts, Jeff has continued to earn recognition. He received the Suffolk County Water Authority Environmental Steward Award in 1989 and was honored in 1994 as the recipient of Long Island Sierra Club's Environmentalist of the Year Award.
