From Long Beach to Southampton, the volunteer Citizens Advisory Committee has begun making the words "South Shore Estuary" familiar to businesses, tradespeople, environmentalists and families at dozens of area events over the last year and a half.
These tireless Long Islanders inform fellow citizens about the south shore estuary comprehensive management plan, garner support for the effort and attract additional volunteers. They've shown their fine exhibit on the estuary at more than 20 expos around the bays and the region. These volunteers rarely miss a chance to remind us of what we all must do to protect our precious estuarine resources.
The citizens committee produced educational materials, and now is updating them and developing more. Soon to appear are a new brochure and traveling exhibits. This very newsletter is a result of the committee's brainstorming and recommendation to the Council.
The busy committee is on call to give talks about the estuary and the developing management plan. Members have many future projects in mind; new, imaginative ideas emerge from every one of the committee's well-attended monthly meetings. Volunteers on subcommittees make sure the ideas become reality.
So people may contact the Council, the citizens committee set up a special telephone line. You are encouraged to call (516) 470-BAYS with any questions you may have about the Council or its activities. The citizens welcome you to their meetings, generally held on the second Tuesday of each month. Please call the above number for confirmation of future meeting dates.
