Message from the DirectorDear Friends: As the new director of the South Shore Estuary Reserve (SSER) Office, I am thrilled at the opportunity to begin working directly with partners on the SSER Council and the people of Long Island to implement the Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP) for the Reserve.
The commitments of Governor Pataki, Secretary of State Randy A. Daniels and Council partners to achieve the objectives of the plan are evident in the more than 70 projects that have been completed or initiated by the Reserve’s local governments, including over $16 million in state financial assistance awarded by Governor Pataki since 1995. With a South Shore Estuary Reserve Office soon to open in Freeport, greater strides will be taken to implement the plan. Reserve Office staff will assist the Council on stormwater management, water quality monitoring, habitat restoration, open space preservation, planning for a Coastal Heritage Trail and other priorities. The office will be located at 300 Woodcleft Avenue in the heart of the Village of Freeport maritime center. Woodcleft Avenue, known to many as the “Nautical Mile,” is well-suited to host the new SSER office as it represents a successful, state-assisted collaboration between local government and businesses to revitalize the waterfront. I am confident that the SSER office will contribute positively to Freeport and other communities throughout the estuary. As implementation of the CMP continues and gains momentum,
the SSER Office will help the Council develop an interactive State of
the Estuary website where estuary partners will be able to report on and
update their progress on priority actions in the plan. The website will
inform the public about ongoing and planned work while helping policy
makers identify where additional implementation resources are needed. Jeffrey D. Fullmer
